Hillel Academy's Success in the C&W Tennis Tournament

April 5, 2006

This season Hillel Academy entered four teams in the Cable & Wireless High School competition. We entered three boys' teams in the Under 14, 16 and 19 Divisions and, for the first time, a girls' Under 14 team.

Under 14 Girls
The girls did very well for their first season ever and finished the season winning three matches overall.

Under 14 Boys
Our boys' under 14 team made it to the National Finals and lost 3-2 in the quarter-final round in a close tie against Monroe.

Under 19 Boys
The boys' under 19 team lead, by Dax Vernon and Adam Vaz, made it all the way to the National Finals outranking the favourites, The Academy, who have two of the top ranked juniors in the island.
In the Finals they faced Wolmers, the defending national champions, in a close tie that went on until late at night.
Dax Vernon lost a hard-fought match against Eldad Campbell.
Adam Vaz quickly dispatched their second seed, and Christian Battaglia played an incredible match against Kristofer Martin, a Junior Davis Cup representative, at the third seed position and lost by only a few points. It then came down to the doubles where Scott Roman and Christian beat Wolmers´┐Ż second seed doubles team to bring the score to two all and due to bad light the final match had to be played at the Liguanea Club under the lights. Adam and Dax played well but lost to Kristofer Martin and Eldad Campbell and so Wolmers won the tie 3-2.

Our team was praised as the most disciplined team by the organizers of the tournament and they also performed so well that Coach Carlos won the award for most effective coach.

All in all it was a good season and it showed that although a small school, Hillel can compete at the highest level with the rest of the nation.

Congratulations to all our Tennis Team members and of course to our very own Coach Carlos!
