University and College Information Evening

September 4, 2009

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

At Hillel Academy we wish to provide as much information about the university selection and application process as we can to our students and their parents and guardians.

There will be some important changes starting in 2009 and we would like to invite you to a University Information Evening on Thursday 17 September at 5.00 p.m. in the PAC. We would encourage all students and parents/ guardians of grade 12 and grade 13 to attend this important information opportunity, but the session is open to all students, parents, and guardians whatever their grade. It is never too soon to learn about the important transition from school to college which, for many, involves moving away from the island of Jamaica! We will be informing you about the new electronic application system which we will be introducing this year. Increasingly, universities worldwide are adopting electronic application procedures as the norm and we at Hillel cannot lag behind.

Many of our students wish to study in the USA and as part of the application process colleges ask students to sit the SAT Reasoning examination. We offer regular SAT preparation classes for students interested in preparing for the SAT Reasoning Test (which includes sections on critical reading, mathematics and writing) every Friday at 2.20 p.m. Additional sessions are held at weekends when a test date is approaching. It is important for students to attend these sessions in order to maximise their score potential.

In preparation for the SAT paper, all grade 12 students this year will sit the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) on Wednesday 14 October. Besides providing an insight into the SAT itself, students with US citizenship who do well on the PSAT are eligible to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Unlike the SAT, the PSAT test is returned to students so that they can see which questions they scored well on and which they had difficulty with. The PSAT therefore provides students with accurate knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses.

As usual, university representatives will be coming to Hillel to introduce their institutions to the students. The University of Miami will be here on September 17, Kalamazoo College on 24 September and Northeastern University in Boston will be coming to Kingston over the weekend of 26 / 28 September. Please look out for posters giving more information nearer the time of these visits.

As the school's university guidance and admissions counsellor, I would finally like to remind you that my door is always open for individual or family meetings to discuss the important question of university applications. For grade 13 students, the clock is ticking!! For some courses at some universities, October 15 is the deadline for the receipt of applications. Please ensure that you come to see me in good time to meet those important deadlines.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Derek Bleyberg.
