Mr. Cleary has recently been awarded the UWI Postgraduate Scholarship to read for an MPhil/PhD in English. His research interest includes Renaissance Literature and Caribbean Masculinities. His current thesis proposal seeks to explore the representations of masculinities in Caribbean Women's Writings; specifically the works of Olive Senior, Lorna Goodison, Elizabeth Nunes and Shani Mooto.
He has presented papers on Olive Senior's poetry at the last two West Indian Literature Conferences in Guyana and Jamaica. The paper presented at the latter is currently being considered for publication in the Journal of West Indian Literature. He has recently received funding from the University of the West Indies to present at the Ohio Valley Shakespeare Conference. His paper, "The Politics of Beauty in Shakespeare's Sonnets", has also been shortlisted for the M. Rick Smith Graduate Award to be announced at the conference October 14 - 16.
